“Tendonitis” is a very common cause of pain. It is generally caused by overuse or repetitive motion injury. Common areas affected include the elbow (medial and lateral epicondylitis), Achilles and knee (patellar tendon). The current paradigm calls for rest and anti-inflammatory medications to treat this painful condition. But, this approach is typically ineffective. Why?
NSAIDs (ibuprofen and naproxen) target the inflammatory pathway in your body based on the chemical known as Prostaglandin. The problem is that there are no Prostaglandins or inflammatory cells in the painful tendon. This was found in a study involving Swedish Army recruits (the only ones tough enough to withstand this study!). A small micro dialysis catheter (tube) was placed surgically into their painful tendons. The results showed high levels of CGRP and Substance P along with other chemicals associated with Neurogenic Inflammation (NGI). NGI is due to chronic nerve irritation that leads to degeneration and pain of the affected area…in this case the tendon.
Neural Prolotherapy targets the cause of NGI. By injecting small amounts of medicine around these irritated nerves, the pain is decreased and healing of the affected area may begin. The typical course is marked improvement, if not resolution, of pain and function in 4 to 8 treatment sessions.
