Nobody likes injections but we implement multiple techniques to decrease the minor discomfort associated with injections.
Yes. Most patients feel better after the therapy so driving should not be an issue. But, if you feel light-headed afterwards, we may elect that you rest at the clinic until feeling improved
With Prolotherapy, we are stimulating your body’s own natural healing response to heal injured ligaments, muscles, tendons and nerves. Taking NSAIDs (e.g. Ibuprofen, Naproxen) will blunt your own healing mechanism.

During your pathway to recovery at MD 2.0, we will assess any potential health conditions that are affecting your ability to heal in a negative way (hormonal imbalance, nutritional deficit, medical/disease processes). We can also suggest potential actions that can give your healing system the most benefit to take advantage of prolotherapy.
Depending on the type of treatment you receive, pain relief may be from 1 day to 1 week. Patients with nerve pain may notice that the pain returns but not as severely as it existed previously. There is a subset of patients that may have a “flare” of pain. This may be due to genetic variation in the TRPV1 pain receptor or it may signify a significant “healing response” by your own body.
We encourage activity during your treatment. Your body responds positively to the forces placed on your musculoskeletal system during and after treatment. We do not want you to “push through” the pain if it is severe though. Our general recommendation is “activity as tolerated.” If you resume activity (whether work work or play), try to keep your level of pain below 5 out of 10.
Prolotherapy is adversely affected by narcotic/opioid prescriptions so they will not be given. If you are currently taking prescription pain medication, follow up with the prescribing doctor to taper off the pills to avoid withdrawal symptoms. NSAIDs (Ibuprofen, naproxen) are not recommended because they also blunt your ability to maximize the benefits from Prolotherapy.
Traditional Prolotherapy typically is performed on a monthly basis until healing is achieved. This may be from 4 to 12 treatments. Neural Prolotherapy is done on a weekly basis with an average of 4-6 treatments needed to extinguish your pain. There is also a “fast track” treatment protocol for Neural Prolotherapy consisting of up to 3 treatment in a one week period. This protocol leads to faster healing of the affected area but the total number of treatments is increased.
Yes. The medication utilized is mannitol or dextrose combined with other potential additives designed to stimulate your body’s own natural healing system. There are no corticosteroids or other harmful substances.
The most common “complications” of Prolotherapy are the brief discomfort of the injections, mild local bruising, occasional flare of pain. Anytime there is an injection, there is a small chance of skin infection, but sterile technique is utilized to decrease this from occurring.
Intricate knowledge of human anatomy is also applied. Certain areas may be higher risk (near arteries or other organs). Therefore, depending on the area being treated, a discussion will occur detailing potential complications in the informed consent.
